SKYLIGHT is run by award-winning novelist, Susanna Jones. We offer classes and one-to-one tuition for writers of all levels. New sessions and events will be added in January and February 2021. Most sessions will be taught by Susanna but there will also be guest workshops and readings. There will be a maximum of 20 participants per session/course but groups will usually be smaller with extra sessions offered when one is over-subscribed.
Susanna Jones is the author of several novels, including THE EARTHQUAKE BIRD which was recently made into a Netlix Original film starring Alicia Vikander. She has been teaching for more than thirty years and from 2003 to 2018 was the main fiction tutor on the MA in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway University of London. Many of her former students have gone on to publish novels and win awards. She has taught writers of all levels, from beginners to PhD students. She now specialises in mentoring and teaching small groups. From spring 2021 she hopes to be out and about again, teaching workshops in Brighton, London and elsewhere. Find out more.

New! Monthly Mentoring Scheme
Limited number of places available. Minimum 3 months
A monthly mentoring session on 5,000 words of fiction + written report.
Most mentoring schemes offer a number of sessions to be taken over a period of time with the purpose of completing a novel. The simplicity of the this scheme is that you can submit whatever you're working on and take as many sessions as you need. You can follow the scheme for 3 months then sign up for the next 3 or take a break and sign up again when you're ready.
You may want to use the scheme to support you through to completion of your novel or you may be at an earlier stage and want a supportive space in which to experiment, try out different ideas and develop your craft. You might use a block of sessions to prepare a few chapters for submission to an agent or a course application. It's entirely up to you.
Each month you submit:
5,000 words of fiction
up to 3 pages of revised work from the previous session (optional)
2-3 pages of accompanying material such as plan, synopsis, draft letter to agent etc (optional)
You will receive:
an introductory meeting (via Zoom or Skype etc) of approximately 20 minutes to discuss aims and objectives
a 50-minute feedback/discussion session per month (via Zoom, Skype etc)
a follow-up written report with line-by-line editorial notes
Fee: £150 per month, payable in advance in 3-monthly blocks.
'I felt a little ambivalent about joining an online writing course but it turned out to have been such a good move. Somehow I found it easier to focus, not harder, and the fact that I could simply continue with what I was writing the moment the class finished made for some very productive Sunday evenings. Susanna is just lovely. She has a knack for nudging you gently towards fresh perspectives, different angles. In just a few sessions I found myself thinking very differently about what I was writing, what I could be writing, and why. Not at all what I’d expected!'
'Susanna's artful teaching method helps you get those words down on paper with no pain or shame. Inspiring!'
'Susanna is a brilliant creative writing teacher and mentor who is now mentoring me through my second book. She has that rare capacity to pinpoint exactly what works and doesn’t work in a piece of writing, and why. Whether you need help with overall structure and direction, or a close critical reading with a scrupulous editor’s eye, she will give you the best possible support to transform your writing.'
'Susanna was my tutor on the MA and I looked forward to her classes every week. Her feedback was always spot on and encouraged me to reflect on my writing in new ways and dig a little deeper. Susanna is one of those rare breeds of people who both excels at her craft but is also able to pass on her knowledge and years of experience in an engaging way. She is just a brilliant tutor and I can't recommend her highly enough.'
'Susanna Jones was an outstanding lecturer on my MA course in creative writing - her books were one of the reasons that I chose the course. She provided clear and helpful teaching on how to produce the best writing, together with incisive critical feedback. Being such a talented author herself gave her a unique insight into the most effective ways to encourage budding writers. I have no doubt that my work measurably improved as a result of her efforts.'
