How does it work?

Once payment is made, we will set up a time for your introductory chat to discuss your aims and objectives etc. During this chat we'll also arrange the date and time for your first session. By agreement and with sufficient notice these can be rearranged where necessary.

 

Your work (5,000 words, double-spaced) should be submitted by email one week in advance of the meeting.

We will have a 50-minute meeting to discuss your work. You will receive a follow-up written report and editorial notes on your manuscript. We can also use this time to discuss your overall progress, suggested reading, ideas to support your writing practice, any plans you have to submit work, eg to agents or competitions.

From the second month, you have the option of submitting a few pages of revised work from the previous month along with your new work.

 

You may also submit two to three pages of related material for discussion, eg. synopses, character studies, draft letter to agent etc, where relevant.

Who is the scheme for?

The scheme is for any writer who wants the structure and support of regular deadlines, feedback and support. 

For writers who would like to do an MA but time or cost makes it impossible, the scheme offers an alternative. You'll be submitting work and receiving feedback at a pace similar to that of many MA courses. Similarly, if you have done a creative writing MA and miss the structure of regular deadlines, this scheme may offer the environment you need in which to finish your MA novel or work on your next. You may just enjoy writing and would like to take your work a few steps further to see what you can achieve. 

Do I need to submit work to be accepted for this scheme?

You'll be asked to submit a few pages of fiction when you apply. While Susanna works with writers of all levels, it may be that in terms of genre or style, she wouldn't be the best match for your writing. 

If you're a beginner and not yet confident with technique, it may be better to start with a Tuition for Beginners session where we can work in detail on a shorter piece of writing. 

Chapters Tuition and Mentoring reserves the right to refuse any applicant. 

How do I pay?

The scheme works in blocks of 3 months, payable in advance. Payment can be make by BACS transfer.

 

If I have to cancel, can I get a refund?

Up to two weeks before your introductory session, the fee is refundable in full. Thereafter it is non-refundable. If unforeseen circumstances mean you are unable to complete three consecutive months, you can take a break during the three months and resume at any time within 6 months of making payment (longer in exceptional circumstances, by agreement). 

I'm unsure about committing to three months in advance. ​

You can take a one-off session (same word count etc) for £175. If you decide to sign up, this will count as your first month and the fee will be taken off the total so you will pay £275 for the remaining two months. Note: this option is only available for your first block of three months.

Is it possible to reschedule the meeting once the date and time have been arranged?

Rescheduling of a meeting is possible. Obviously, the more notice given, the easier it will be to find an alternative time. A minimum of 24 hours' notice should be given.
